Ben Welland has been a full time professional photographer since 2003, but he first became interested in photography in 1994 at the age of fourteen when he built a black and white darkroom in his basement. He photographed his first wedding in 1997, and he studied photography for two years at Algonquin College, starting in 1998 and earning a diploma in photography in 2000.

In the years since, he has photographed hundreds of weddings, worked for many editorial and commercial clients, and has taught several photography courses at Ottawa’s own SPAO – School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa. Ben is probably best known in the Ottawa community for his work with Ottawa's weekly arts newspaper, Xpress. He was the primary photographer at Xpress for 10 years until the paper finally closed its doors in May of 2012.

Ben now works exclusively as the lead photographer at byfield-pitman photography where he's the owner of the company. He is also an active member of Wedding and Portrait Photographers International as well as Fearless Photographers.
