Based in Ottawa since 1997, byfield-pitman is specialized in candid and natural wedding photography, events, portraits, lifestyle, editorial and brand photography.

Our wedding and event pictures are very candid and our work is best characterized by the sense of narrative that's present in our documentary-style pictures. Our knack for storytelling can be found in the emotional and joyful moments captured between a couple on their wedding day, and our flair for photojournalism can be seen in the way that we shoot events of all kinds, whether it's a corporate gala or a private soiree.

Ben Welland is a full-time professional photographer, and is the owner and lead photographer at byfield-pitman.

Ben first became interested in photography at the age of fourteen when he built a black and white darkroom in his basement. He photographed his first wedding in 1997, and he studied photography for two years at Algonquin College, starting in 1998, and earning his diploma in 2000. He was the recipient of the Corel Imaging Award for the best digital image at the Algonquin Student Exhibition that year.

Ben taught several digital photography courses and workshops between 2006-2008 at SPAO, and he was the primary photographer at Ottawa's weekly arts newspaper, Xpress, for 10 years between 2002 and 2012. Ben was the recipient of a Fearless Photographers award in 2014 for this image.

In the years since, Ben has photographed hundreds of weddings, worked for dozens of editorial clients like Edible OttawaXtra!, Diplomat, and Ottawa Magazine, and has worked both as a portrait photographer and as an event photographer on various projects with his many commercial clients in Ottawa.

Now, in 2024, in addition to working as a photographer, he is once again teaching photography with the Digital Photography I: Foundation course at SPAO.
